Pathfinder supports APD Engineering as installation and communications partner for a Rail Control Network in the Pilbara

Pathfinder ConnectedCommsPartner

For over 10+ years, Pathfinder has been the partner of choice for business critical communication infrastructure for those within the IT, industrial, resources, utilities and engineering sectors. As their connected communications partner, our clients rely on us to make their lives easier.

Developing and growing such trusted partnerships has its foundation in the team’s broad spectrum of connectivity expertise – data, networks, infrastructure, communications – and in our approach to be organised, mobilised and resolved, resulting in minimal impact to our clients’ end-customers.

Between September 2022 to the beginning of this 2023 year, the Pathfinder team was the installation and communications partner for APD Engineering’s important project of implementing new TDM network elements and services into an existing Rail Control Network in the Pilbara.

The challenge: APD Engineering’s Pilbara Rail connectivity project

APD Engineering were engaged by an Iron Ore Mining client to design, procure, configure, commission, and integrate new TDM network elements and services into an existing Rail Control Network in the Pilbara.

Through APD’s extensive 22 years’ experience in design, commissioning, and implementation of critical operational telecom services, APD enabled the client to migrate off an “end of life” telecom carrier’s product and transition services onto the new fibre and SDH backbone telecommunications infrastructure, utilising both existing and new infrastructure to deliver the final product.

This brought the immediate benefit of transitioning reliance off the legacy service before the disconnection date from the commercial product, maintaining services for control and management of the rail signalling network via a high availability operational TDM network.

The solution: Pathfinder as an installation partner

Pathfinder was selected as the installation partner for the site implementation and assisted APD Engineering in cutover activities for the new services. The project involved building a parallel network and migrating the critical live services onto the new network in conjunction with a “rail shut” in which all trains had to be stopped in strategic locations to enable recovery after services were restored.

The result: seamless and problem free outages and cutovers

Pathfinder were able to complete the installation pre-works including power and fibre cabling, equipment installation and tie cables to present communications channels at each remote location. The timing and quality of these pre-works ensured the final outages and cutovers went seamlessly and without problem.

“APD Engineering were pleased to have partnered with Pathfinder to augment our Engineering services for this project,” commented a spokesperson from APD Engineering.

“The client and APD Engineering were extremely pleased with the high-quality product and delivery of the project’s objectives, meeting the tight delivery deadlines, within budget and with no safety incidents.”
